  1. Known to the ancient world as Taprobane. Colonists from northern
  2. India subdued the indigenous Veddahs in about 543 BC.  Their
  3. descendants, the Buddhist Sinhalese still form most of the
  4. population.  Hindu descendants of the Tamil immigrants from
  5. southern India still account for one-fifth of the population. 
  6. The island was occupied by the Portuguese in 1505 and by the
  7. Dutch in 1658.  In 1796 the British seized the island and in
  8. 1948, it became an independent member of the Commonwealth as
  9. Ceylon.  On May 22, 1972 Ceylon became the independent Republic
  10. of Sri Lanka.  Tensions between the Sinhalese and the Tamil
  11. separatists has often caused violence.  In 1987 hundreds died in
  12. an attack by Tamil rebels.  Sri Lankan forces responded by
  13. attacking the rebel held Jaffna peninsula.  India has become
  14. involved in the fighting.                    @
